Another world war ( 1938 - 1945 )

Summer Learning Journey - Another world war ( 1938 - 1945 )

Activity 1 : Write a short summary of two events, including the names of people involved and where the event happened.

In 1939 on September 3, the Australian government and New zealanders declared war on the Germany. They are the only ones that I know that are associated with the event. Another event that occurred in 1938 - 1945 was in 1938 on September 4, The British Royal Air Force launched its first bombing missions against German targets.

Activity 2 : Choose one from the Second World War, and read about him. On your blog tell us about him. Who was he? What did he do to earn a Victoria Cross medal?

I read about a man named James Ward. This man was the first New Zealand airman to get a VC. He received his medal for climbing out onto his burning wing of the plane and smothered the fire. Two months after the incident, James Ward was unfortunately announced dead when he remained at the controls of his burning plane after it was hit.

Activity 3 : Complete the story provided above. To earn full points you must write, at least, 8-10 sentences. What happens next?

One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang. You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you…

Rush inside to the doctor and you see him treating a patient. You calmly approach him and whisper " The rear end of the ship is under attack we need to evacuate to the ships". He looks at you with shock plastered on his face, he glazes into your eyes and without hesitation he usheres everyone out of the rooms. As we flea for our lives we hear another bang. Everyone has a quick glance and see smoke covering the surface of the boat. As men and women aboard the evacuation boats the doctor says that he will return soon. Then another man comes and lowers our boat, I plead that he waits for the doctor to come back but he refuses my request. As our boat gets further and further away from the ship I see the doctor run back to the edge of the ship with a perplexed look on his face. He then sees us drifting off and we make direct eye contact. As we stare endlessly into eachothers eyes we hear another bang. This time it wasnt the sound of the ship getting hit, it was the sound of a gun shot. At that very moment I see the doctor plunge over the rail of the boat and into sea. From once blue seas they then turned red.

Hi Limiteti,

Oh my, what a creative addition you made to the story of the fire on board a ship during WW II. Good on you!!!!

I'm glad that you did some research on a WWII airman. Can you imagine how brave the soldiers, sailors and airmen and female staff had to be to be involved in the war? What a tragedy that James Ward didn't survive the war. There were so many that were extremely courageous but didn't live to tell the tale. So sad...

I'm really glad that you're participating in the Summer Learning Journey!!! I'll look forward to reading more of your blogs.

I live in Canada and I'm Rachel Williams' mom - it's wonderful that I get to participate in this program as a responder to the blogs!

I hope you're really enjoying your summer holidays and keep up your great work.

Hey Limi

What a fantastic story. You really know how to use strong adjectives on how the characters feeling and how he is acting. Keep up the fantastic work.

Hi Limi!

What a great blogpost, I agree with everyone else - your story is really creative and action-packed!

It's crazy to think little old New Zealand was so involved in these huge war times, sending so many brave and courageous men to fight for us.

Have you learned much about the ANZAC's? When I was in Turkey, the Turkish people were very respectful of and kind to any Australian's or Kiwi's they met due to the result of the war and the many ANZAC lives that were lost on their land in the war of 1915 in Gallipoli... Which I find really interesting.

I look forward to reading more of your blog, Limi!

Nicky :)
